I would to say this is a decent place to stay . I understand the building is over 100 years old but some things need to be updated . The rooms carpets are extremely smelly, the manager is very rude . The showers drains are horrible , after you wash once the floors are already flooded . The homeless are very present and will harass you . Overall , no bed bugs , nice people to meet and loves the fire place .

had bed bugs and my neck has been swollen for 5 days due to bug beds and I only stayed one night. Also I wasn't aware the cat would be inside the hostel and my allergies were in full swing. Everyone was nice but I would stay again as the bed bug issue has caused a lot of issues for my skin and throat area.

Their staff was racist and the manager was okay with it because of my ethnicity. I found a bedbug in two door ways. Avoid this place if you value your self esteem and don't want to infest all of your friends and relatives with bedbugs. Update: management's response to the review confirms their racist beliefs. Further, I'm now a resident of Colorado but was not at the time of service. I left in disgusting after being called a series of racial slurs by their employee and later discovering the dead bugs. And, last, the only haters here are the ones who work for the Lodge. ***when you read the update, thanks a bunch for confirming your racism for all to see, Ember employee. Oh, and, reverse racism doesnt exist... it's just called racism. Theres nothing reverse about it.***

Vibe Analysis
Set inside a spacious historic house in Denver's Capitol Hill, Ember leans into the character of an old building: traditional furniture, stained glass, eclectic decor, big lounges, and a large projector screen for movie nights. The outdoor patio is the centerpiece, with a hot tub and a fire pit where people gather at night to relax and meet other travelers. It is an easy walk to a Trader Joe's, plus coffee shops, restaurants, and bars, and downtown, Union Station, RiNo, and the State Capitol are a short walk, bus ride, or rideshare away. The immediate area can feel a little rough, with homelessness nearby, though right around the hostel it generally feels safe. The dorm setup is a strong point. Bunks have privacy curtains that block light well, a personal reading light and outlet, hooks, and an under-bed locker, and a clean towel is usually provided. Bring your own lock. Beds are generally comfortable, though one mattress is overly soft. There are unusually many bathrooms and individual shower rooms, several recently renovated, with hot water, good pressure, and waterfall showerheads, so you rarely wait. The building is keycard-secured to enter and again to reach the dorms. The vibe is social and friendly, with regular events, and a good fit for solo travelers. At quieter times it can feel calm and even quiet, which suits some and disappoints others looking for constant activity. Staff are a real high point, with several standout individuals going out of their way with recommendations and help. A resident cat lives on the property. The kitchen is small with limited counter and dining space, an induction stove and no oven, and a fridge that fills up fast, but it has utensils, storage, and French presses, plus free tea and coffee and a tea station. Laundry and luggage storage are available. Pricing runs toward the high end for a hostel, and the amenities do not always fully match the price.
Signals to check
- Heat is the biggest issue. Many rooms run hot and stuffy, especially in summer, with weak or broken AC, portable units with loose exhaust hoses, or only fans. Some bunks have fans and some do not, and a few travelers leave or buy their own fan to sleep.
- Cleanliness is inconsistent. Expect occasional dust buildup behind bunks and on bed fans, musty or body-odor smells in some dorms (the basement dorm especially), slow or flooding shower drains, overflowing trash, and sometimes dirty or unchanged linens, alongside plenty of spotless stays.
- A cat lives on site and is not always disclosed at booking. Cat hair turns up around the building, including the kitchen, and anyone with allergies or asthma may react badly on arrival.
- Customer service is hit or miss. There are plenty of warm, helpful interactions, but also rude or condescending front-desk treatment, strict one-strike rules, and instances of people being turned away or removed.
- Billing and refund disputes recur: double charges (including reservations already paid through third-party sites), and refused or very slow refunds, sometimes tied to non-refundable bookings.
- A noticeable smell of marijuana smoke around the garden, patio, and at times inside the building can bother non-smokers.
- Sleep can be disrupted by late-night noise, slamming old doors, and patio gatherings, though quiet hours are usually respected.
- Isolated but serious incidents include bed bugs or other bugs, and a theft from a room tied to an unsecured door. There is little secure parking, and break-ins to cars parked nearby have happened.
- The kitchen and some bathrooms are small and narrow, and the building has many stairs, which is hard for anyone with mobility issues; some bathrooms sit a distance from the dorms.
