The room was filled bed bugs and it took 7 hours to hear from the management on a course of action. Their housekeeping staff literally only changed the sheets on the bed after seeing bed bugs with their own eyes. I woke up at 3 AM to a swarm of bed bugs biting me and had to sleep in the lobby to escape. And they had to nerve to try and refund us for only nights that we cancelled. I am covered in bites, have had to spend a trip that cost lots of money just attempting to mitigate the risk of infestation, and most likely have to discard of most of my clothes and suitcase for fear of bringing this issue back home. Horribly negligent and undeserving of hosting any guests.

BED BUGS. My partner woke up with many bites and found a bed bug after only one night in the hostel. Hostel staff said they’d investigate and then ignored all emails afterwards. We were not compensated. A bit overpriced anyway, and generally dirty — go somewhere else. UPDATE: They informed us they didn’t find any bed bugs, and won’t compensate us. It is clear that the bed bugs could not have come from anywhere else, and there are plenty of other recent reviews showing similar experiences.

This is, by far, the worst and most filthy hostel I’ve ever stayed in in my life. The entire hostel is filthy but ESPECIALLY if you end up in one of the buildings that is not the main one. Someone came in and trashed the kitchen in our building one night and poured milk on the floor and the cleaning staff seemingly just let it dry into the ground. 4 days later and there’s still residue and chunks of the original food that was spilled on the ground. After 4 nights and 5 days our bathrooms have never been cleaned. We have asked repeatedly to have the soap and paper towels replenished because it’s out in every bathroom we have access to, and 5 days later we’ve never had it refilled. Of the three showers we can use, two of them have broken shower doors so the water sprays out flooding the floor. I’m genuinely worried if this is the standard of cleanliness that I’m going to leave this place with bed bugs. The kitchen is disgusting. Not a single surface has ever been wiped down. Not the tables, not the fridge, not the cabinets. Your hands get sticky from touching them. The dishes are rarely actually washed and more so just rinsed off with water (which can’t be solely chalked up to being the guests fault because there also is just watery soap in the kitchen and, shocker, no paper towels). On top of the absolute filth, the bartender here is extremely aggressive about getting you to drink their overpriced crap. He’s literally harassed us to follow him to the bar to buy a drink, getting many people to do it just to get him to go away. And then when you are forced to buy a drink to make him leave you alone, he tries, continuously to sell you more than you want. Be careful coming here if you struggle with alcohol or being sober. And good luck sleeping if the people in the room above you are walking around or dragging their luggage lockers out from under the beds. The noise is not only incredibly loud but it shakes the walls of the room and is actually made worse with earplugs. They also leave the door to the main building wide open until at least after 2 am so they don’t have to buzz the smokers in and out of the building. Incredibly secure. The worst place I’ve ever stayed. If I had the money I would have left the first night.

Vibe Analysis
There is no real front desk here. Almost everything runs through an AI chat assistant, and the only humans on site tend to be the housekeeping staff. When things go smoothly this self-service setup is fine and the check-in codes work. When something breaks, it falls apart fast: the assistant repeats canned apologies, the listed phone numbers often go unanswered, and there can be nobody around to actually fix a problem. People have ended up locked out when door codes failed, sometimes stranded on the street for hours waiting for a working code. The location is the strongest thing about the place. It sits right by São Bento station, steps from the cathedral, the Time Out Market, and the center, which makes getting around very easy. The street itself can feel rough at night, and arriving alone late can feel unsafe. The biggest recurring problem is damp and mold. Many rooms smell musty, with mold on bathroom ceilings, shower edges, curtains, and walls; for some it affected their breathing. Carpeted floors are often dirty, and cleanliness is hit or miss: hair in the beds, stained sheets and quilts, dust, and rooms that were not properly cleaned on arrival. A few rooms turn out clean and comfortable, so it varies, but the problems are heavy and frequent. There have also been serious bed bug and insect incidents, with people bitten in the night and slow or inadequate responses. Hot water is unreliable. Cold or barely warm morning showers are a recurring problem, sometimes for the whole stay, and air conditioning often does not work. Rooms are small, with little space for luggage, tiny bathrooms, and outlets placed awkwardly low or behind furniture. Beds are generally comfortable, and the housekeeping staff stand out as kind and helpful even when little else goes right. Practical frustrations stack up: check-in is only at 16:00 and check-out at 10:00 with no flexibility unless you pay extra, luggage storage costs money (sometimes per hour) and the locker codes sometimes fail. The included breakfast is a bag left at your door with the same few basic items every day, and the common room has a microwave and kettle but often no sink, plates, cutlery, or fridge. Walls are thin and noise from neighbors and the street carries. A few people were moved to a different property at the last minute or hit with overbooking.
