Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 1249 top-rated reviews and 1% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 7.87. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

asked for them to review
My groceries got stolen on New Year’s Day. I asked for them to review the cameras and nothing was done. This also happened to a few other guests. I understand the manager is away but there has been zero follow up. If anything else more valuable got stolen would this be the same attitude? Also I understand the garden is under construction. It would have been nice to know the main social Attraction isn’t available before booking and paying full price.

reviews are plagued with bots and fake
The Ryan Air of hostels, except it’s not cheap. The worst hostel I have stayed at. Don’t be fooled by the exterior, the rooms feel like a prison, poor lighting, the bathrooms flood with water, and there are no fans. Noise all through the night from the nearby clubs. Hostel staff rude, and the girl at reception stole 10k off of myself and a friend for the towel deposit. Find another place to stay. You’d be better off sleeping in parque lleras. Their reviews are plagued with bots and fake accounts

reviews.. thinking they may be fake
Selina Medellin is VERY MISLEADING: false advertising.. I see a lot of good reviews.. thinking they may be fake? Or maybe it just wasn’t the place for me.. I traveled solo.. it is a cheaper option in Medellin for sure but you get what you pay for. Not too easy on the eyes. I stayed for 6 nights.. found myself uncomfortably hot every day in the room as there is no air conditioning.. not even a fan. Several days no hot water only cold for showers. No TV if you did want to watch something.. the bed was not to my liking.. and I can’t stop thinking about how hot I was in that room!.. no need to bring these things to immediate attention as once you booked no refund.. and these things weren’t something that could be fixed immediately.. so I had no choice but to deal with it for the 6 nights.. Roaches. Had to shake all my things out prior to leaving and also had to be extra caution to not leave my bags and things open.. Just not an ideal place to stay at all.. I felt disgusting staying here. Also website states you will receive free breakfast.. but I guess everyone does not get free breakfast.. I didn’t at least and was told my room did not come with free breakfast.. it’s around a lot of things to do though so that was okay.. staff was nice / kind. My only complaint is the room itself. I personally would not stay at Selina Medellin again if I were to visit.

reviews are fake
Think most reviews are fake. Its not adding up to the stars if you check. Ive done most hostels in medellin, do yourself a favor and pick Los Patios or Viajeros instead, they're more serious and social hostels with better standard and value, Sociatel is a complete mess. Don't get drawn in by lower prices. The hotel knew ahead of time it was full but kept the booking confirmed in the app and didn't actually cancel it at all, instead asked me to cancel it by myself when I arrived?! By me contacting the booking service?! What is this? 😅🤣 0% accountability for their error when picking booking platform and organizing rooms. And dont overbooked the hotel when fully booked. On arrival my booking was confirmed and paid, but hotel was full and no refund was given, no help or contact was offered to handle the situation. Later bookings were accepted than mine, even if i booked before them - at least cancel in order? Putting me in a bad situation finding last minute hotels in a fully booked Medellín and spending a day of my vacation problem solving, packing and in uber. ------------------------ I stayed the days before in the hotel and the review of the actual rooms: Wifi and internet in rooms are not sufficient for work or video calls. Router extender in the hallway. Around 10-20 mbps sometimes but spotty. Very noisy on the Provença side of the building, loud music until late night. No people, Basically a large empty building. Charging 8000 for a small water at the reception and no nearby options. Laundry is self service but you have to buy detergent - come on? Its supposed to be a coliving co-working place? Why squeeze pennies of petty things. Just a bad vibe.

Vibe Analysis
Socialtel Provenza Medellin wins on location: Provenza, restaurants, malls, and nightlife are close, with a yard, hammocks, cafe/breakfast setup, and a few staff bright spots. It can work when the neighborhood matters more than hostel chemistry. The social promise is shaky. The current pattern includes empty common areas, weak atmosphere, spotty room Wi-Fi, old rooms, reservation friction, and uneven service. Treat it as a location play with some nice corners, not a reliable solo-traveler engine.
Signals to check
- Valuables disappearing and limited help are a recent safety warning.
- The atmosphere can be empty and weak for solo travelers.
