Possible Hostelworld
READ BEFORE BOOKING!! WARNING!! I only gave one star because hostelworld will not let you leave a review with 0 stars, but this was a 0 star experience. I dont know if this property has shifted in management or if something else is going on. We read reviews and saw the photos on Hostelworld and were SO excited to stay here. We stayed two nights. It was an AWFUL experience. My friends and I are very outdoorsy and have spent many, many nights in rough conditions. I would have 100% preferred to sleep in a tent. We did not meet any of the folks who worked at the hostel, no one greeted us, checked us in, or asked if we needed anything. I was eventually able to contact someone via WhatsApp but this was after a full day lag in response. There are two poor old dogs who seem to get fed but otherwise are very unkept. I gave them fresh water because their bowl was filled with bugs and debris. There is no food available to purchase on site, there is apparently a cocktail bar, but it doesn’t seem to be open and there was not even a place to make coffee or purchase water. The tap water is suspicious (and, once again, there was no one there to ask). The trash in bathrooms and kitchens did not seem to have been emptied for days. There was substantial dust and bird feces on all surfaces, including kitchen counters. The whole property is open air and many rooms do not have window screens so bugs and birds come and go as they please. This is a HUGE HEALTH CONCERN. There are no places to secure or store things. No locks on the bedroom doors. Some doors don’t even have handles. One of the kitchens was absolutely overflowing with dirty dishes and was unusable because of this. It smelled awful. There were dirty dishes strewn about other rooms as well. There were other kitchens but we were unwilling to use them because of the bird feces and the potential for disease spillover. There were dirty looking blankets on the beds, some didn’t even have a sheet covering the mattress. On top of this, all of the beds were covered with debris because of the state of the ceiling. No a/c which is fine, but there were no fans and no screens on many windows. One of the showers barely worked, another did not drain. One of the bathroom sinks was full of dirty water and apparently also did not drain. Someone staying there came in late and broke a picture on the wall and the glass on the floor was never fully cleaned up. None of the listed activities were available because we didn’t know who to ask. None of the photos matched the reality we experienced. The only positive was that, when the manager (or someone?) finally got in contact with us, they allowed us to shift rooms to a room with a screen, since our first room didn’t have one (I woke up with a swollen upper lip because of bug bites after that first night).

Bed bugs! We read reviews that there were bed bugs, despite them having pest control in and trying to assure us the problem was under control we found bed bugs in our bed. No one’s fault but we left straight away

It was really cheap and was so beautiful can’t fault that. However, there are no lockers in the room, locks on the door or security so anyone from the outside or in the hostel could enter your room. We had bed bugs along with other guests. Reception seemed quite hostile when asked about this and booking the shuttle bus. There aren’t any shops nearby so you have to walk 25 minutes to town or 45 minutes to supermarket.

Bassetto Guesthouse is currently experiencing a massive bed bug infestation and therefore I would not recommend staying there. However the place itself seemed cozy, and the atmosphere was fun. There also isn’t any locks or lockers but it still felt safe to leave your stuff. The manager helped us get to a laundromat to launder all our clothes and was pretty helpful. We ended up leaving and finding a different place to stay in for our second night.

Loved staying here, it was amazing, I met so many great people, the volunteer staff were to friendly and great, the pool was fantastic to have on hot days. Unfortunately, there were bed bugs in my room during my stay but I was moved rooms and my stay was refunded as soon as I alerted the staff. Despite th3 bed bugs, I loved it so much I extended my stay an extra two nights and I would still come back to Bassetto given the opportunity

while we were there, bed bugs became an issue as a number of guests had to leave due to being infested with bed bugs. Plus we watched the staff clean the rooms, once the beds were striped the sheets were sprayed down with Disinfectant spray and put back on the bed. The hygiene levels were not kept to a standard. maybe if the sheets were washed regularly, bed bugs wouldn't have been an issue.

I really love what Bassetto is trying to do. It is a beautiful property and is really special. But they need to take care of the property better and have actual cleaners and not just volunteers… After leaving I learned about bedbugs in the property from other guests I met there. The organized trips are lovely, did the wine tasting which was great. They should advertise there is no grocery store close by and groceries should be bought before arriving as there are also not restaurants nearby.
