Explain how it works

We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.

The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 2254 top-rated reviews and 0% were suspiciously short.

Length z-score: 11.80. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.

This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

    • Reward tied to a review reviews - you get a free shot

Don’t fall for the good reviews - you get a free shot if you give a good one! To be honest This hostel wasn’t for me. It looks pretty from the outside but the bathrooms were very dirty. The vibes were also completely off - it’s very cliquey. Not very social and hard As a solo traveller. The reps didn’t make much effort to rectify this either - they never spoke to me. The doors didn’t lock properly either and anyone can just walk in.

    • Reward tied to a review review to get a free drink

I got food poisoning from the hostels food. Took 40 minutes to get the food , so I asked for it and then they came out with it , but is was cold. Don’t eat the food there. Also the staff was very rude , especially when you asked them a question, they also only did the bare minimum and took so long to even get to order something in the bar. It’s like they ignore you. When you check out they want you to write a review to get a free drink. So I think many people just feel forced to write smth good

    • Pressure to leave a review encouraged. One of the reps approached us asking us to write a good review

Will not be returning and ended up checking out a day early. The cleanliness standards in the dorm were inconsistent. While the bed sheets seemed clean, other areas were clearly neglected. The lockers were visibly dirty and not very practical for storing belongings. Even more concerning, the bedside shelf still had contact lenses left behind from a previous guest, which raises serious questions about how thoroughly rooms are cleaned between stays. The dorm setup could also be improved. Getting comfortable in the space wasn’t easy, and several people in the room seemed to be suffering from what we called an “air con cough,” suggesting the air conditioning system may not be properly maintained or cleaned regularly. One of the biggest letdowns was the food service. We paid nearly £20 for what was advertised as a buffet 3 meals set times, expecting reasonable quality and availability. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. Dinner was advertised as running from 5–7 pm, but by 6 pm the food had already run out. Instead of replenishing it, what appeared to be leftover rice and noodles from earlier in the day were served. This was extremely disappointing, and to make matters worse, my friend became very ill later that night, which we strongly suspect was linked to the food. Another concern was how reviews are encouraged. One of the reps approached us asking us to write a good review in exchange for a free shot. There was also a sign in the dorm stating “leave a great review on Hostelworld” for a free shot or coffee. This made it feel like honest feedback isn’t genuinely encouraged, which is disappointing for future guests relying on accurate reviews. Noise was another major issue throughout the stay. Despite being told that music would stop at 11 pm, it continued loudly until midnight every night. This made it very difficult to get a proper night’s sleep, especially in a shared dorm setting. If you value rest, this is probably not the place for you. There were a couple of positives. Drinks were affordable, which is a plus for budget travellers, and the toilets were generally clean. However, even these lacked consistency, as they often ran out of basic supplies like toilet paper. Overall, while the hostel may appeal to some backpackers looking for a social atmosphere, cheap drinks, and instagram videos around the pool, the issues with cleanliness, food quality, noise levels, and approach to reviews significantly impacted the experience. For the price, I expected a much higher standard.

    • Reward tied to a review reviews because they are bribing free drink

I didnt like hostel is getting good reviews because they are bribing free drinks and shots for good reviews. Rooms are way too small and when i wanted to transfer to a Private room they tried charging me the full amount and not the price difference. Plus staff werent really helpful

    • Reward tied to a review review they will give you a free drink

Firstly, if you do a good review they will give you a free drink so don’t believe everything :) but honestly, the hostel is still really nice and clean. They throw events each night but the music is SO loud so don’t expect to have an early night. Also, the wristbands didn’t work half the time so it was a bit annoying to keep having to go to the reception.

    • Reward tied to a review reviews come from their “good review = free shot

One of the hostels I wouldn’t return to. The vibes just weren’t great — it felt more like an Instagram spot than a cool, social hostel. Most people there seemed more interested in looking good all the time than in having relaxed, genuine conversations. The place also didn’t feel cozy at all since it’s way too big. The beds were clean and the staff was friendly, but that’s about it. I’m guessing many of the good reviews come from their “good review = free shot” policy.

    • Reward tied to a review review: I did not take any of the free things offered as bribe

Honest review: I did not take any of the free things offered as bribes for a good review so rest assured this is an honest opinion. Overall I had a good time here, great party atmosphere, something going on every night, amazing pool. However this place definitely relies on you being too drunk to notice that they have overcharged you for everything. Pretty basic facilities, out of order showers, terrible food, and the care from the staff is often laughable, at one point our whole dorm room had to vacate for a 'routine' bug check (yikes) and we received no compensation for the inconvenience, even though it meant we all had to pack up our stuff for the day, put it in a unlocked room right by the entrance, and then put it all back that night.

    • Pressure to leave a review reviews before coming all complaining about the staff

Facilities are amazing, staff are unfriendly and rude. Read the reviews before coming all complaining about the staff and thought it’s just people being a “Karen” but it honestly lived up to the bad reviews. The girl checking me in didn’t tell me any info about the hostel i.e girls toilets were out of service to use the ones upstairs, you need a band to pay for items and get you into your room which she forgot to give me, never paid the same price for the same drink, staff just adding on charges

Vibe Analysis

Lay Day Hostel Uluwatu is built around the pool, the bar, and a nightly party rhythm. It can work well for a loud social trip in Uluwatu, especially for younger travelers or groups who want drinking games, events, DJs, and an easy base near restaurants, beaches, and local attractions. The pool area is one of the strongest parts of the place, and the setup has a modern, resort-like feel. Beds can be comfortable, with curtains in dorms, and the location makes it practical for exploring Uluwatu without feeling tucked away from the action. The social scene is high-volume and not universally warm. It can be easy to meet people when the crowd clicks, but it can also feel cliquey, group-heavy, and more hookup-party than backpacker community. Staff energy is mixed: there are friendly, helpful moments, but service at reception, the bar, and food service can be slow or uneven.
