A resident dog lives at this hostel, and your feelings about it will shape the stay. For some it's the best part — a sweet pup named Flopi who makes the place feel warm and homey, and the hostel is openly pet-friendly, accepting animals and kids in private rooms. For others it's a problem: the dog barks for long stretches at night with no one around to quiet it, sometimes relieves itself on a rug or in rooms when doors are left open, staff play fetch with it in the hallways, and at times it acts aggressively toward people. The location is the clearest strength. It sits in the center of Viña del Mar, roughly three blocks from the bus terminal and close to the metro, bus stops, shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and Quinta Vergara, with the beach about a 10–15 minute walk away. It's a big, spacious hostel with roomy common areas, a living room with a TV that runs YouTube, and a selection of cards and board games to pass the time. The kitchen is well equipped, though on the small side for a hostel this large, and free coffee is sometimes available. Owners Diego and Carola and the rotating volunteers are warm and welcoming, and the place can feel genuinely homey. The building is old, and it shows. The wooden floors creak loudly with every step, which carries through to rooms and makes sleep hard when people walk the halls. Walls are thin and noise travels, both from neighbors and from the lively street outside. Beds are a recurring weak point — lumpy, hard, or with springs and wire poking through, and curtains for privacy are often missing. Cleanliness is inconsistent: rooms and common areas can be clean and tidy, but bathrooms are frequently small, and at times dirty, mouldy, or smelling of urine. Hot water is unreliable — sometimes warm and plentiful, sometimes cold or only working if you're the only one showering. Daily room cleaning isn't guaranteed; you may be expected to tidy your own space. Lockers are a real issue: many have no working mechanism to attach a padlock, so bring your own and don't count on secure storage. Payment and check-in problems happen often enough to plan around — surprise charges, a card surcharge, refusal to refund the tourist tax that foreigners shouldn't pay, a fee for luggage storage, and occasional reservation mix-ups or double-booked beds. Reception access can be frustrating too: the door is sometimes locked with a long wait outside, occasionally half an hour, and no one reachable by phone, including late at night. Breakfast, when offered, tends to be minimal — bread and butter with coffee or tea.
