Why this surfaced

Repeated, deduplicated traveler-review reports matched these incident categories:

One report can match more than one category. Counts describe review reports, not independently verified incidents.

These are reports in traveler reviews, not independently verified incidents. Duplicate review text and strong repeat-reviewer identities count once.

Category matches are automated. Relevant passages are exact review quotes selected from concrete incident wording, not hidden model rationales. If none appears, treat the match as suspect and check the full review.

I’m extremely disappointed with my recent stay at Wombat’s Hostel. I had booked and paid for a female-only dorm, yet when I arrived, I discovered they had allowed a male guest to stay in the room due to overbooking. At no point was I informed about this change, and I only realised when I walked into the dorm. This is completely unacceptable, especially considering the safety and privacy expectations that come with booking a gender-specific room. When I raised my concerns with the receptionist, I was simply given an email address to contact. I emailed on 30th November and, after receiving no reply, followed up again on 3rd December. As of now, I still haven’t received any response at all. For a large hostel chain, the lack of communication and disregard for guest comfort and safety is shocking. I will not be staying here again and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable or respectful accommodation experience.

DO NOT STAY HERE. The day before yesterday we returned from Budapest and the last night was terrible. In the morning I woke up around 6.40am and noticed that someone had entered the room and all the girls I was with were sleeping, after some time of thinking I got up and saw a man standing by the door and looking straight at me like a madman, I was scared like never before, I suddenly woke up my friend and the man slowly and very quietly left the room, it was dark but what I could notice was that he was an older man and some other details. After we went to the reception and explained the situation to a guy who for some reason was completely uninterested in our situation after we told him that a similar man was at breakfast and staring at us. We gave all the information and he didn't ask for almost any of it, and his answer to check the cameras was that he apologized because it was Sunday and he couldn't call the manager because he wouldn't answer. The story ended there because we are young and it was the first time we encountered such a situation, in another country, we didn't want to threaten with the police because we knew that they wouldn't do anything special about it and would probably ignore it because "the man didn't do anything or steal anything", because obviously breaking into someone else's room and standing in the dark for 2-3 minutes is not enough to consider the situation serious. I'm just saying this to warn women who are planning to stay here, be careful, but in a broad sense, avoid it, it's my sincere recommendation.
    • Cleaners entered the room without notice.

Cleaners entered the room without notice. Service wasn't listening to requests. Rooms intertwined with dorms where parties are happening with almost no noise isolation within rooms. Will never come back.
    • Staff came into the room a couple of times without really saying anything - think just to check, but was a bit strange.

Room was big with lots of storage, bar and lounge area were nice. Location good near metro, airport bus, lots of things in the neighbourhood. Room was in the far corner of the building and windows opened up to the air conditioning vents, so was quite unpleasant. Beds very uncomfortable and could feel the slats through the mattress. Staff came into the room a couple of times without really saying anything - think just to check, but was a bit strange.
    • someone came into our room multiple times despite the do not disturb sign.

Staff was super nice. Common room facilities were nice. Had a private on the 4th floor, it smelled like sewage. AC must be different in Europe because it never got cold or even cool. A fan ran while it was on, but it never cooled down. Luckily there was a ceiling window we could open cuz it was above 25 the whole time. Could've gotten over this, but someone came into our room multiple times despite the do not disturb sign. There's a sign about belongings not being safe, they know it's a problem.
    • The maintenance guy entered the women's room without warning, there was a girl changing.

They don't clean the room properly, they smell like urine and the washing pipe smells very bad. They do the”cleaning” at 8:00 am while you sleep, they don't mind coming in and turning on the lights and making noise. The maintenance guy entered the women's room without warning, there was a girl changing. I called the reception and they came to get the staff out but then they never came to clean the room. They don't wash the duvets, they just fold them.

Vibe Analysis

Wombat's City Hostel Budapest is a huge, central base on the Pest side, close to nightlife, food, supermarkets, metro links, airport bus links, and the main city wander-paths. The lobby and common zones are big, with a bar, shared kitchen, laundry, lockers, pool/game space, and room to eat or work. Some dorm beds have curtains, individual fans, charging spots, lockers, or small safes, and some rooms are spacious and clean. It works best as a short, practical crash pad for groups or travelers who already have their crew sorted. The social chemistry is weak for solo travelers: the building can feel hotel-like, anonymous, and full of groups, with limited hostel-hosted bonding. Budapest chaos is right outside and sometimes inside, so this is more logistics than cozy backpacker commune.
