Explain how it works
We compare every 5★ review's word count against the global distribution. Hostels where unusually many top-rated reviews are suspiciously short — way under the typical length — start to look like the staff (or a boost-my-listing service) is padding the score with throwaway praise.
The detector flags reviews that are both top-rated and below a length threshold, then estimates how many of them statistically shouldn't exist. For this hostel we scanned 2114 top-rated reviews and 1% were suspiciously short.
Length z-score: 13.21. A z-score measures how far this hostel's distribution of 5★ review lengths sits from the global average, in standard deviations. 0 = perfectly typical. 1–2 = slightly unusual but within normal noise. 3–5 = strongly anomalous. Anything 10+ means the pattern is so far from the global norm that it's effectively impossible to get there organically.
This is a heuristic, not a verdict — it surfaces hostels worth a second look, not proof of fraud. Read the actual reviews below and judge for yourself.

payed 56 euros a night for this. I’ve never written review
Complete worst and the most expensive hostel I’ve ever stayed at. It was very dirty and the bathroom in the dorm was broken. We had to use the shared bathroom/ shower for the entire floor (which was nasty) The top bunk beds don’t even have a shelf to put your water or phone and the lights didn’t work. We were even kicked out from the rooftop because they had a private event .. we payed 56 euros a night for this. I’ve never written reviews and never been so mad about staying in a hostel.

free breakfast. location is 10/10
the staff was nice. to compensate for the water problem they offered us free breakfast. location is 10/10. when we checked in at 15:00 all bathrooms we’re out of water and the problem was only solved at around 21ish although they said 18:00. we know the staff can’t control these things but this is really bad overall management. we can’t use the toilets or take showers when there’s no water. they should’ve offered us the option to have our money back because it’s even disrespectful to accept guests when the hostel has no water. the pillows were a bit too flat and the towels had stains on them and they smelled a bit too. we were also not offered smaller towels, only shower ones. the sheets were not appropriate for the winter either. overall they have a nice environment in a top location and I truly think it’s the bad upper management that makes it really bad. it could’ve been much better.

told us that they are fixing it but after reading the online review
No air-conditioning! The staff told us that they are fixing it but after reading the online reviews we found out that the ACs in the rooms had been not working for several months! The worst part was that the ACs in the reception and the bar were working just fine, where their staff used to work from!

Vibe Analysis
There is no shared kitchen or common fridge, and outside food may not be allowed in common areas. Safestay Barcelona Passeig de Gracia works best if the only thing you need is a very central bed near Casa Batllo, Passeig de Gracia, food options, and walkable sightseeing. The building has a reception area, cafe or bar spaces, lockers that may need your own paid padlock, and a rooftop or terrace area that can be nice but may be unavailable during private events. The dorm setup is basic and often uncomfortable: metal bunks can shake or squeak, privacy curtains are generally missing, top bunks may lack shelves, individual lights can fail, and rooms can feel hot, cold, stale, or poorly ventilated. Noise is a serious part of the stay here, from slamming doors and hallway traffic to late-night dorm disruption and loud music. Wi-Fi can be unreliable, especially if remote work matters. Bathrooms and showers are a major weak spot. Expect tiny shower spaces, push-button water, drainage problems, dirty floors or fixtures, missing soap, and inconsistent upkeep. Cleanliness problems extend into rooms for enough stays that this is not a tiny footnote; stained sheets or towels, unmade beds, bad smells, and bedbugs have all been part of the recent picture. Service and operations can be rough. Room assignments may change, groups can be split, assigned beds may already be occupied, check-in can be slow, and overbooking or no-bed situations have happened. Staff interaction ranges from helpful reception moments to cold, rude, or unprofessional handling when something goes wrong.
Signals to check
- No shared kitchen or fridge; outside food may be restricted.
- Bedbugs have been an issue, alongside broader cleanliness problems.
- Bathrooms and showers can be dirty, tiny, poorly drained, or short on basics like soap.
- Dorm beds usually lack privacy curtains and can be noisy or shaky.
- Room assignment, overbooking, and occupied-bed problems can happen.
- Storage, towels, luggage holding, locks, activities, and taxes may add extra costs.
- Not a good fit for remote work, light sleepers, privacy, or anyone needing reliable staff support.
