Bed bug reports

We stayed here from the 1st to the 4th of October and the experience was an absolute nightmare. After settling into our dorm, we returned on the third day to find all the mattresses flipped, our belongings forcibly removed, and our locked bags were opened. Reception casually told us that there had been a bed bug report days earlier and that “everyone in the room knew” we were supposed to move. This is completely absurd—how can a hostel assume strangers in a shared dorm will somehow inform each other of critical instructions? We never even met the people who reported it! The hostel had my contact details and never once bothered to reach out. As a result, our property was tampered with, a towel was lost, our padlock was destroyed, and we unknowingly slept for two nights in a room they had already deemed uninhabitable. The so-called “compensation” was being put into a private room for the final night (which we couldn’t even feel comfortable in, given the bed bug issue) and an insulting offer of free breakfast that was later switched to free drinks after my partner said we would be gone by breakfast. This was appalling mismanagement from start to finish. The staff’s complete failure to communicate, protect guest property, or handle a serious pest issue responsibly is unacceptable. We left feeling angry, uncomfortable, and absolutely let down.

Our stay (Oct 1–4) was a nightmare. Staff failed to inform us about a bed bug issue, even though they had our contact details. We returned to find our mattresses flipped, belongings moved, and locked bags opened. We unknowingly slept two nights in a room deemed uninhabitable, lost items, and had property damaged. The “compensation” was a last-night room change and free drinks. Appalling mismanagement, zero communication, and total disregard for guest property and safety.

My dorm at first was me and another man, then two girls joined which was nice. However one girl woke up in the night with what we believe was bed bugs! The staff were great about it, moved us to individual rooms and we got complimentary breakfast, however the next day they told us it was not bed bugs and she just had mosquito bites (they looked like bed bugs). The difference between how clean the hotel rooms were and the dorm rooms was also alarming. The dorm shower had mold, but hotel room none

I was bitten by a bed bug here at the Meininger Hostel. I was bitten by something in bed at night, and found that it was a bed bug. I caught it right away and showed it to the staff. When I found a bed bug, I showed them a picture and the bite site. And he moved rooms. The manager told me to tell him about the refund at that time because he had to come to work at 9 a.m., but since I had to check out at 7 a.m., he told me to request it via email. Then the reply I received was that a refund was not possible because there were no bed bugs found in the room. Then why did the employee ask me to request a refund?? What did I catch and what did I get bitten by? What are the photos?? Are you saying I'm lying?? This fact makes me feel even worse... I moved to another place, washed and dried all my clothes and luggage, bought medication for bed bugs, and was so stressed out from the itchiness that they treated me like a liar. I often use MEININGER hostels while traveling around the world. Now there is no need to go to all Meininger places, not just Krakow. If you see it as a manager's job, you don't have to look anywhere else.

Vibe Analysis
MEININGER Krakow Centrum is a big, modern hotel-hostel near Krakow Glowny, tram and bus stops, and roughly a 10-15 minute walk from the Old Town. It works best as a clean, functional base: bright rooms, spacious bathrooms in places, lift access, Wi-Fi, a shared kitchen, luggage storage, laundry, and a 24-hour front desk. The social energy is more corporate transit hub than classic backpacker den. Tour groups, families, school groups, and short-trip travelers are part of the mix, so the building can feel busy and anonymous rather than intimate. Solo travelers looking for easy hangs may find the atmosphere pretty flat. The shared kitchen and common areas can be useful, but the kitchen may be crowded, short on utensils, and messy. The game room exists, though equipment may need to be collected from reception and games can cost extra. Rooms are the main contradiction: the building can feel new, secure, and clean, but housekeeping is inconsistent. Dorm layouts can be odd, including bunk beds without curtains, narrow beds, limited storage, and in some mixed rooms a double-bed setup that may feel uncomfortable for strangers sharing space.
Signals to check
- Housekeeping may need to be requested, and rooms or bathrooms may still miss basics like towel changes, floor cleaning, toilet paper, or full-size towels.
- Breakfast is a weak spot: limited choice, cold items, low-quality food, and poor value are recurring issues.
- Staff service can be cold, rushed, or unhelpful, especially around check-in, room problems, refunds, parking, and bar service.
- Noise can be an issue from corridors, street traffic, trams, outdoor areas, school groups, doors, and thin walls.
- Air conditioning and ventilation may be unreliable; rooms can get hot, bathrooms can hold humidity, and drains have caused flooding or bad smells.
- The underground parking is very tight and may be stressful for larger cars; reserve carefully before relying on it.
- This is not a cash-friendly setup, and extras such as lockers, games, laundry, breakfast, or parking can add friction.
