upon arrival you have to call to enter. us travellers cant do this. Lucky a stranger walking by helped. the owners were very passive aggressive. As soon as i looked at my bed i saw blood spots/stains. I reported this at 11pm the lady came in within 5mins. This confrontation isnt nessacary esp after travelling all day. Could have waited for the morning. Quickly defensive said its rust stains. Really? I know blood stains when i see it. Either mosquito or bed bugs. Straight away insisted i was wrong. Told me i could change beds. Offered refund but i said its ok. Couldnt sleep that night so the next night tried to talk to the husband. He was worse said it was rust also. Said if i wanted a refund he'd give it to me and i can leave. pretty much kicking me out at 9pm. No other hostels in the town. This whole situation was out of control. just form talking bc i still had 2 more nights. So i decided to check under the mattress.. i saw bed bug eggs & droppings from the original bed. I didnt sleep at all for the next 32hrs. I got out of there when i could and just avoided the owners. Other travellers came in at midnight havin problems checkin also. Lucky we were in the kitchen to help them out.

Hostel was nice, really big and new, would’ve been great if it was full. Unfortunately I was one of maybe 3 guests but it’s not the peak season anymore. It was really quite cold at night and there may have been bedbugs

Vibe Analysis
Hostel Citadella is a very clean, modern Deva hostel with a hotel-like feel: spacious dorms, comfortable beds, privacy curtains, bed lights, plugs, shelves, and large lockers. The setup is practical rather than chaotic, with a huge kitchen, a big lounge, free coffee or tea, and clear organization around shared spaces. The terrace and courtyard can bring views toward the Deva fortress, and the location works well for the citadel trail, the cable car area, the train station, buses, nearby shops, and day trips toward Hunedoara or Corvin Castle. It is better for a clean, easy base than for a loud backpacker scene. The atmosphere can be quiet, sometimes almost empty, so this is not the obvious pick for party energy. When the social room, kitchen, terrace, games, and outdoor seating are in use, the hostel has room for connection, but the default feel leans calm, polished, and orderly.
Signals to check
- Reception may not be staffed on arrival, so check-in can require a phone call or WhatsApp access.
- The hostel can be very quiet and is not a strong party or meet-everyone choice.
- Winter heating has been a problem at times, especially in shared areas and bathrooms.
- Bathroom motion-sensor lights may switch off too quickly.
- Cash-only payment has been required at least at times.
- There has been a serious complaint about stained bedding and possible bed bugs, so inspect the bed on arrival.
- Shared bathrooms are common, and room assignments may not always match expectations exactly.
- There is no elevator.
