This isn't really a con for me but more of an observation, although it is a co-working hostel and they have different activities, everyday, the place doesn't have a very "social feel' to it. Even if there's music or a movie playing or guests hanging out at the common areas, it still has a quiet vibe - which can be great or not, depending on what you're looking for in a hostel.

I liked my stay here. I wanted to like my stay here, and I would have given it five stars if not for the ants. Everything was perfect, including the free breakfast, the awesome lounge, clean bathroom, great water pressure, and the awesome comfy bed, EXCEPT for the fact that the first room I was assigned to sorely damaged my first impression of Star Hostel. I found five ants on the bed and two mosquitos flying around the ceiling - the two worst nightmares you can find in a bedroom (almost as bad as bedbugs for me). The room was also dusty and definitely did not seem like they took much care of it. Fortunately they changed my room immediately, but to find out that ants came out in their rooms once in a month or so sort of horrified me. The new room I got was much better, both location- and arrangement-wise. However although I was thankful, I could not help but be paranoid throughout my whole stay. I really wanted to enjoy the soft, clean bed, but every itch I felt while I slept felt like an ant crawling or biting. Thankfully I did not find any ants in my new room until my check-out date, but I very much wish I had never found those ants or else my stay would have been so much better, with no nightmares of ants in my bed. Warning - if you are a light sleeper, be prepared for the non-soundproof walls. Even if your neighbors are quiet, you can hear the sound of water turning on, and the door closing and opening very, VERY clearly. I kept waking up at those noises because they were unexpectedly loud and felt much closer than they really were.

Vibe Analysis

The standout here is the common area: a high-ceilinged, wood-filled lounge with lots of natural light and many seating spots. It is genuinely beautiful to sit in, and some people find it so comfortable they are tempted to scrap their itinerary and just hang around. There is also a self-serve kitchen, and a wall map marking popular spots and how to reach them. Location is about as good as it gets. The building sits right by Taipei Main Station, connected through the underground city mall (Exit Y13 puts you minutes away), with plenty of local eateries and a 7-11 nearby. The property is up on an upper floor, so you take the lift to check in. Free breakfast is included, though it runs on a system where you pick a time slot in advance, the menu is fixed with little or no choice, portions can be small, and on some days dishes arrive lukewarm or cold. The place is clean, stylish, and calm, but it leans quiet and not very social. Expect a lot of families and older travelers, and few real chances to meet people, so solo travelers hoping for a party atmosphere may feel let down. Shoes come off at the entrance and go in cubbies, and you switch to provided slippers, which some find unhygienic since they have been worn by others. Paid washers and dryers are available, with laundry on the rooftop. Rooms are the weak spot. Dorms are tight and typical of Taipei, with very little room to unpack a suitcase, and lockers that fit only a small carry-on. Sound insulation is poor throughout, in dorms and private rooms alike; you can clearly hear neighbors snore, shower, cough, and flush, and light sleepers often struggle. Some private rooms have a glass-walled bathroom, which offers little privacy and can leave the room stuffy. Showers and toilets can be too few for the number of beds, leading to queues, and drainage is sometimes slow. Staff experiences are inconsistent. Many find them friendly and helpful, but others run into cold, rigid, or unwelcoming treatment, especially around strict rules like the firm 3pm check-in with no flexibility for early arrivals.
