Guest report Hostelworld
Beautiful location, terrible experience We found bedbugs, but they refused to help or reimburse us. A staff was rude, insulting and made an obscene gesture with his p***s. I felt very unsafe. We asked if we could get back the money for the laundry and the last night. They told us we had te email them. We did, at first we got a respond, but we never got our money back. They ignored us. We heared this happens to multiple guests.
Vibe Analysis
Estrella, the hostel dog, is part of the Onahu rhythm: beach walks, little missions around Chacahua, and an easy social glue around the place. The setting is a simple beach hut built on sand, close enough to the water for sunrise, surf, hammocks, palms, and nights around a fire. Max and Alex give the place its strongest personality. On a good day, Onahu feels like a tiny, friendly home base where fishing, surfing, bioluminescence tours, shared meals, fresh fish dinners, and Chacahua tips can fold into the day without much ceremony. The atmosphere leans chilled and social rather than party-hostel loud. Facilities are basic but useful: a small shared kitchen, shared bathrooms, WiFi, hammocks, fans, mosquito nets in at least some rooms, and simple pod-style dorm beds. Cleanliness and comfort seem strongest when the hostel is not overloaded. This is better for low-maintenance beach people than for anyone expecting polished hotel infrastructure.
Signals to check
- The setup is basic, sandy, and rustic by design.
- Chacahua can have electricity and water interruptions, which may affect toilets, showers, fans, and WiFi.
- Dorms and lower rooms can get hot or noisy, and sound isolation is limited.
- Mosquito nets, room condition, cleanliness, and refund handling have been inconsistent.
- There are serious complaints about management behavior, booking mix-ups, and poor handling of water problems.
