Quick disclaimer before the horror show: every quote here is an unverified guest allegation from a public review. Reviews get things wrong, exaggerate, or go stale. A place that had a nightmare week in 2024 might be totally fine now, and one bad review proves nothing. This isn't a ranking of the worst hostels, it's a tour of how a stay goes sideways, in the guests' own words. Every named place links to its live page so you can see where it stands today. I quote instead of paraphrase because the detail is the whole point.
Biohazard pileups
The worst sanitation reviews are never just one thing. They pile up. A guest at Urban Nomad - Kings Cross in Sydney: "there was blood on the stairs, faeces in the toilets... flies in the kitchen, also hadn't been cleaned since dinosaurs roamed."
Princess Hostel Leidse Square in Amsterdam gets this complaint more than anywhere else in my data. One review opens "FOR F SAKE! This place was disgusting,"* mentions "poop and mold everywhere," says it only lets you score it 2.6 but "I would give a -3.5," and signs off worried about scabies. In San Juan, a private room at Casa Santurce showed up with "moldy pillows, broken fixtures, broken appliances, and also what appeared to be a BDSM setup installed on the bed."
No working locks
This is the one I'd actually worry about, because it's a safety thing. At Uluwatu Mansion Hostel in Indonesia: "A man broke into the boys dorm and was going through their stuff one night which got reported and the staff didn't seem to do much or have any security cameras." At Black Forest Hostel in Freiburg, 26 euros a night and "the rooms doesn't even have a lock, anyone can get in at any time (I felt so unsafe)," with cops showing up overnight. At Vientiane Ruby Backpackers Hostel: "Lots of random people walking around the hostel I felt very unsafe it is completely unlocked and open to anyone."
Bedbugs, plus everything else
Bedbug reports on their own are weak. They get bad when they come with filthy bathrooms and a shrug from staff. At Por el Mundo Hostel in Rio, a guest got specific: "live adults and eggs near the bed area (approximately 30cm from my head). This was not a single stray insect." At New Generation Hostel Prague Center it reaches the kitchen: "staff pissed on the toilet and didn't flush or wash hands (there was no soap nor toilet paper) with dirty hands they do your breakfast." Unsafe for women
Privacy violations, ignored complaints, women leaving early. At Casa Amelio Roma Norte in Mexico City, a solo female traveler says a male employee "was caught filming women in the WOMENS ONLY SHOWER. He deleted our messages in the Whatsapp chat warning the other guests." One review, presented as an allegation, and the most serious thing on this page. At Bcnsporthostels in Barcelona, cleaning staff "opened the door without knocking and one man came in," one shared toilet "which you can't use unless you want to flash everyone," and an area where it's "impossible to walk alone if you're a woman." At St Christopher's Inn Amsterdam - The Winston, a couple packed up mid-night after a run of "creepy people," because "we didn't feel safe at all."

When the reviews themselves are rigged
This last bunch stacks a real complaint with "...and the good reviews are fake." At Mad Monkey Chiang Mai: "they must bribe people with alcohol for good reviews because this hostel was disgusting." At Vientiane Ruby again: "Do not stay here. The reviews are fake." And my favorite, at The HiPinto Social Experience in Bogota: "someone has stolen 1 of my boxing glove here, which seems like a signal of a personal problem as there is nothing you can do with 1 boxing glove." If a score looks suspiciously high, check the hostel's "sus reviews" page first — it estimates how many five-star reviews look bought.
Not just hostels
A separate sweep of the worst hotel and guesthouse reviews turned up stuff that barely shows up in hostels. Most of these aren't HostelPunk hostels, so I haven't linked them, but they're worth knowing as a traveler. Guests alleged staff walking into rooms at night, female-only rooms that got male guests anyway, double charges and card fraud, "bait-and-switch" listings dumping you at a worse property, and listings for hotels that didn't physically exist, leaving people stranded at 4am.
How I built this
I ran bounded searches over low-rated reviews for the worst combos of terms (bedbug, stolen, unsafe, urine, feces, sewage, mold, cockroach, blood), then grouped by property and kept the repeat offenders. Multiple bad reviews with overlapping serious signals is what separates a real pattern from one bad night.
What it misses: it leans on English reviews, it can't verify any single claim, and it undercounts weird one-off complaints that don't trip a detector. So treat every quote as a lead to check on the live page.
