We realised on our second morning that there were bed bugs. Initially one of the staff tried to say it was our fault because we should have reported it on the first morning (we initially thought it was a mosquito issue) and implied we could have brought them in from elsewhere (nope!). They refused to give us a refund but we were given a voucher for one night’s stay in another Che hostel. They also did our laundry for free. We were offered a different room but didn’t feel comfortable so we moved hotels.

The outside and social areas of this hostel are lovely! However my mattress had (seemingly dead) bed bugs. The staff were very apologetic about it and offered me a new bed but it definitely put a dampener on my stay. Surely after a fumigation you should clean the mattresses? The 10 bed female only dorm was extremely spacious but almost to a fault: it was very echoey and due to its location beside reception it was very loud. My bunk was also really creaky every time I moved.

I did get bed bug bites, pay more attention to that please

Pros: - cheap, even for a private room - safe for a solo female traveler - very kind and helpful staff - there are resident cats 😍 -amazing location, 10 min walk from plaza grande, paseo Montejo and 5 min from historic center (Santa Lucia park etc) - super easy to socialize with all the events and tours they host which are also pretty cheap. They also host dinner parties and such Cons - you get what you pay for. Not the cleanest hostel I have been - there is always some kind of smell in all the areas lol - I could not stop itching the whole time I was there. I had been in Yucatán for five days already and the itching started the night I got there. Not sure if there were bed bugs or not - extremely loud. One of the nights, (Christmas Eve) party went on until 3 am. I had a tour early in the morning and had to cancel it because I couldn’t get enough sleep - no freezer, only refrigerator

Vibe Analysis

CHE Nomadas Merida is in a strong central spot for Merida, with restaurants, bars, tours, and the Zocalo within walking range. The pool courtyard is the main hangout: loungers, hammocks, outdoor seating, and a bar setup make it the obvious heat-survival zone, especially in the afternoon. The dorm setup has a few practical wins: big beds, privacy curtains in at least some dorms, under-bed lockers, shelves or sideboards on bunks, plug access, large rooms, 24-hour reception, and extra luggage lockers after checkout. There is also a kitchen, coworking space, laundry may be available, and tours or hostel activities may run, though the activity rhythm can be inconsistent. The vibe is a bit unstable. It can work for meeting people and partying, and the New Year's function landed well, but it can also feel quiet, awkward, or franchise-flat outside drinking hours. Music around the garden and pool can be loud from morning into late evening, so this is a better fit for heat, pool time, and low-commitment social chaos than for deep rest or remote work.
