The place wasn’t clean, I found bed bugs in the room, the bed sheets were dirty, we were supposed to be in a room for 6 people and they allocated 8 people in the room. The communication in English is not sufficient. The hostel was overbooked, there were just 3 toilets and 1 shower, they were always dirty and flooded. We didn’t feel secure.

The hostel was undergoing renovations whilst I was there. There were no locks on any doors, no lockers and many, many things inside of the hostel were broken (bunk beds, door handles, bathrooms, etc). Some other people staying their mentioned that theft was an issue. When I arrived there was only one power socket in a room that held up to eight people. There was one working shower for the entire hostel. Watch out when going to the bathroom, many of the bathrooms do not have doors that close properly, let alone lock. The hostel was hard to find (it is in the building behind the kebab place on the second floor) and I was unable to find any signs directing people to it. There was little in the way of day to day management by the owners, instead I had to ask advice from the sole construction worker completing the renovations who spoke English, who remarkably also turned out to be by far the most racist man I have ever met (no small feat) and who gave me lectures in the mornings on his views whilst I was getting ready to head out for the day. By far the worst hostel I stayed at during the months I spent backpacking around Europe. Do not go here unless you have no other option.

Vibe Analysis

Centrum Hostel is a cheap, central Pecs crash pad, best treated as a last-minute bed rather than a polished hostel scene. The useful parts are straightforward: the location is close to the city centre, the price can be low, and there is a shared kitchen that may include basics like a stove, microwave, fridge, and drinkable tap water. This is not a social hostel to romanticize. The atmosphere can feel rough, with drunk people, long-term residents, poor boundaries around dorm rooms, and little sense of secure personal space. Lockers or lockable rooms may be unavailable, and bag storage can mean simply trusting the room. Facilities are inconsistent. Hot water can fail, bathrooms can be dirty or flooded, beds and bunks may be worn or unsafe, and bedding has been unreliable. Check-in can also be awkward: the building can be hard to find, signage may be missing, door codes may not arrive in advance, and staff communication may be limited outside Hungarian. The best fit is a budget traveler who needs the centre of Pecs, can tolerate a very basic setup, and is comfortable carrying valuables all day. Anyone needing cleanliness, calm sleep, secure storage, clear check-in, or a normal hostel vibe should be careful here.
