On the first night we found bedbugs in all the beds in the dorm. When speaking to the manager the next day, we were not taken seriously at all. We let ourselves be talked into staying (big mistake). According to the manager "we were in the jungle and there were bound to be bugs", as if we'd mistaken some scary spider or cockroach for bedbugs. So the next night I took pictures of the bedbugs as proof. After speaking to the owner the next day, the room was completely fumigated. Sadly this was much too late, as everyone in the dorm was already completely covered in bedbug bites. I have never seen a case this bad, my arms and legs look like a red polkadot pattern. We got an easy verbal apology, but nothing formal and no compensation whatsoever. On another note, after staying for a couple of days, all the people in my dorm were having stomach troubles of one kind or another. I don't know if was the food, the drinks, or something else. However, as the hotel is the only provider of food and drinks (you're not allowed to bring your own) I suspect there's something funky going on in the kitchen or the water filter.

Vibe Analysis

Boatique Hotel and Marina sits in the mangroves and is reached by boat, which makes the place feel properly detached from Rio Dulce in a calm, nature-heavy way. Howler monkeys, birds, iguanas, frogs, turtles, and heavy jungle sound are part of the stay, with wooden walkways, greenery, hammocks, quiet corners, and a pool built into the setting. This is more unwind-and-watch-the-river than party hostel. The dorm can be good value, private cabins can feel stylish and comfortable, and the shared bathrooms are often clean, spacious, and hot-water friendly. There are yoga mats, massages, kayaks or SUPs for rent, tour help, and boat trips around Rio Dulce, Livingston, Playa Blanca, and nearby river spots. The restaurant matters here because leaving means using a boat. Food can be fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced, with daily specials and good breakfasts, though quality, portions, and speed are not always consistent. The scheduled free lancha to Rio Dulce is a real perk, but the boat-only setup works best for travelers who are happy to plan around fixed times. The atmosphere is peaceful, small-scale, and more polished than scrappy. It suits nature lovers, couples, and travelers who want a jungle reset with a pool, river access, and a bit of social overlap at meals, not a loud backpacker scene.
