Bed bug reports

Confirmed Google Maps
05/09/25 I really liked this hostel, the staff is amazing. However I found bed bugs crawling around my bed at night. I told the front desk and they said there are no other dorm beds available, and they could not give me one of the private rooms, so I sleep on a hammock on the roof. The next day the manager told me it’s not possible for refund either. Not cool.

Confirmed Hostelworld
I woke at 430 due to bed bugs. My body was bitten all over. I kindly told staff and they did not offer anything-no alternative place to stay at 430, did not offer to clean clothes, did not apologise. Nor did the morning staff. I had to tell them I needed the clothes clean so I would not contaminate other places. No hygiene protocol and it seems this is a common problem here as no one acknowledged it or seemed bothered. I was confused by their lack of hygiene and care for future contamination.

Vibe Analysis
Masaya Santa Marta is the pretty, central, slightly chaotic Santa Marta base: a colonial-style building with two pools, a rooftop bar/restaurant, music, common areas, and enough visual drama to feel more like a boutique hostel than a bunk warehouse. The rooftop is the main gravity well: sunset, pool, drinks, breakfast, a pool table, and that easy trap of staying upstairs longer than planned. This is a leisure hostel, not a productivity monk cell. It can work well before or after Tayrona, Minca, or Lost City logistics: central location, practical access to the market and buses, free luggage storage for up to five days, and staff who can be kind and useful. The air-conditioned work room exists, but the place makes more sense for hanging out, eating, swimming, catching music, and using Santa Marta as a launchpad. The social chemistry is real but inconsistent. There are activities, music, a bar scene, and a young international crowd, yet the layout can feel spread out and some stays land more in hotel/tour-group mode than instant backpacker family. Best fit: travelers who want a polished-looking, central, fun-leaning base and can handle noise, heat, uneven rooms, and a block that can feel sketchy after dark.
Signals to check
- The surrounding block can feel unsafe, especially after dark; use taxis or move with people instead of casual solo walks at night.
- Noise is a real tradeoff: rooftop and street music, thin rooms, and people moving around can make sleep difficult.
- Room quality is uneven: some rooms are small, dark, humid, poorly ventilated, or overdue for cleaning and maintenance.
- Bed-bug incidents were described in 2024-2025; inspect the bed before unpacking and keep luggage off fabric.
- Keep valuables with you and confirm charges and policies upfront; missing-item and billing/check-in disputes have happened.
