Contrary to popular opinion, I had an appalling experience at Alice’s Secret Traveller’s Inn. Levi’s cabin was grimy, dusty and cobwebby… I had to wash my cutlery and crockery prior to using it as it clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly. A large plastic container was provided to store food inside as there was apparently a problem with mice at the hostel. There were remnants of food left in the box from prior guests which was a bit gross. I also woke up on my first morning there with insect bites all over my legs, ankles, feet, arms hands and elbows. As I had only been outside for a moment to walk to the kitchen and bathroom and was fully covered, it seemed I had been bitten in bed overnight. I reported it to Morgan, the lovely manager who was very kind and responsive however when she relayed my experience to the hostel owner who entered the reception area while I was present, he (Seb), became angry, defensive and accusatory, stating that there were 100% no bed bugs at the hostel and that I shouldn’t go reporting as such online because he needed to protect his business. I was absolutely astonished and replied to the effect that I wasn’t accusing them of anything, or planning to make a negative report, I was merely letting them know what had happened. I also replied that it was unreasonable to get angry with me for simply alerting them to the fact that I had seemingly been bitten by insects in bed. This was a completely extraordinary and unreasonable response, and as a solo female traveller, I believe, aimed to intimidate and bully me. I felt very unsafe staying there because of the bites and the way I had been treated and later checked out. Thankfully I had some friends in Alice Springs who kindly invited me to stay with them. I initially wasn’t planning on writing a negative review, but after the way I was spoken to by the business owner, I feel compelled to warn future travellers planning to stay at Alice’s Secret Traveller’s Inn.

Vibe Analysis

Alice's Secret Travellers Inn has a converted bus, caravan-style rooms, a quirky garden, hammocks, a pool, fairy lights, a book room, and a TV/movie room. It feels more like a small, oddball hideaway than a standard bunk-bed hostel, with lots of decorated corners and quiet places to sit. The kitchen is a real strength: big, well equipped, and useful for self-catering, with fridge and food-storage space that can get tight at busy times. There is laundry, secure gated access, free or secure parking, luggage storage, and staff who can help with local tips, taxis, and tours around Alice Springs and the Red Centre. The atmosphere is usually calm, friendly, and low-key rather than party-heavy. It works well before or after an Outback or Larapinta trip, especially for travelers who want a relaxed base with character, a pool, and a garden to decompress in. This is still a rustic hostel, not a polished hotel. Rooms and facilities vary a lot: cabins, caravans, dorms, and themed spaces can be charming, but also small, basic, or worn in places.
