I don’t fully agree with all the very positive reviews. The hostel has a beautiful view, but the location is quite difficult to reach and there is nothing (no shops or restaurants) within walking distance.. Since uber/rapido are not working, you are very dependent on the local taxi services that were quite expensive. Once we entered the room, we noticed that it felt very humid and there was quite a strong mouldy smell. In addition, the bed contained many small bugs (not bedbugs, but still not very hygienic). To their credit, the staff changed the bedsheets immediately after we mentioned it. The bathroom hygiene was also disappointing, and the shower water had a brownish color. On the positive side, the restaurant service was good and the food was nice.

Terrible experience. Unwelcoming staff, barely giving attention, minimum attention. Our room had unpleasant smell from cleaning products and we had bedbugs. We had booked 2 nights and left after the first night even if we didn’t get a refund.. I was very surprised as we read such good reviews before choosing the Monkey Tribe… so it was a very disappointing stay, our only negative experience since we arrived in India. They for sure had been a change of management. I wouldn’t recommend it at all… we found for the same price much much better places.
Vibe Analysis
The tree net on the terrace is the little wait, what? detail here: a stargazing perch built into a rooftop scene with big valley views, games, movie nights, and easy social drift without needing full party-hostel chaos. Monkey Tribe Munnar sits outside town in the hills and tea-country air, with common spaces that can make solo travel feel less atomized. Rooms are often spacious, with comfy beds, balconies or mountain views in parts of the building, and a setup that seems strongest when the basics are clicking: clean dorms, a good rooftop, friendly staff, and a restaurant that can save the day because there is not much else nearby. The food is usually a plus, especially for value, though service can move at mountain-tempo speed. The location is both the spell and the friction. There is a steep approach, Munnar town is roughly a tuk tuk, bus, or scooter ride away, and transport planning matters. The hidden waterfall hike nearby is a real bonus, with swimming possible, and the hostel can help with tours or group trips, though organization is not always smooth.
