YHA Penzance
Bed bug reports
-
Confirmed Booking.com
The mattress is too soft so doesn't support alignment of the spine resulting in lumbar & thoracic discomfort. It also feels like sleeping on latex with the thin lower sheet. The main issue though was BED BUGS! Though I had some scratching on initial nights, on the final night I was awake for most of it and came out in red bite marks on arms, legs & hands. I showed frontline staff. They asked if I wanted to see the manager which I didn't deem necessary because I had already reported it.

Vibe Analysis
YHA Penzance sits in a quiet, wooded spot outside town, with big grounds, a roomy lounge, a kitchen for self-catering and plenty of showers and toilets. When it is on form, the place is clean, the staff are friendly and breakfast gets strong marks. It feels more like a spread-out base for a car trip or a family stop than a tight city hostel. The upside is the setting; the tradeoff is that the experience can swing a lot depending on which room, tent or shift you get.
Signals to check
- It is a long walk from town and awkward if you do not have a car.
- Comfort and maintenance are uneven, with weak mattresses, poor heating, broken showers, and bed bugs in the mix.
- Noise can be a problem, especially from late arrivals, groups, doors and shared spaces at night.
