There is an indoor rock climbing wall inside the building, with a basement cinema right downstairs, and guests often get a discount (around 50%, or roughly $15 for shoes, harness and chalk) to use the wall. That alone makes this a different kind of stay: you can go climbing without leaving the building, then catch a movie underground the same night. The hostel occupies a large converted building in central Rotorua, so the layout feels unusual, sometimes a bit like a car park or cinema rather than a typical hostel, but it puts you within walking distance of the city centre, supermarkets, the i-SITE, eateries, bus pickups and the Polynesian Spa. The staff are consistently a high point. They are friendly, energetic and genuinely helpful with booking local activities like white water rafting and arranging discounts on tours, often with no booking fee. The manager, Dale, gets named again and again as especially hospitable. There are regular social events through the week such as movie nights, quizzes and karaoke, plus a pool table in the reception area and a TV lounge with films and Netflix. The kitchen is large and well used, and tends to be where people gather; it usually has ovens, multiple hobs, microwaves and free tea, coffee and a free-food shelf, though the equipment can be hit and miss, with blunt knives, missing basics like salt and pepper, or too few pans at busy times. The building leans heavily into group bookings, and a 2019 group-accommodation wing has its own kitchen and cinema room. When school groups, sports teams or tour groups are in, it can get loud and feel less clean. Some travellers find a great social buzz; others arrive to a quiet, almost empty-feeling place, especially in the off season or when the common areas shut early. Rooms are basic and secure, with lockers or in-room luggage storage in many rooms, lamps and USB charging at some beds, and clean comfortable bedding when things go well. The big recurring weak spots are ventilation and cleanliness: many rooms and the kitchen have no windows or poor airflow, which makes them stuffy and very hot in summer with only small fans and no air conditioning. Bathrooms can swing from spotless to genuinely dirty, with hair on the floors, overflowing sanitary bins, and soap or toilet paper not being restocked. Walls are thin and doors slam, so noise carries between rooms and from the kitchen late at night.

- Ventilation is a real weakness. Several rooms and the windowless kitchen have little airflow, so they can get stuffy and very hot in summer, with only small fans and no air conditioning.
- Cleanliness is inconsistent. Bathrooms in particular can be dirty, with hair on floors, overflowing bins, and soap or toilet paper running out and not being restocked for days.
- Sound carries badly. Walls are thin, doors slam, and rooms near the kitchen or lounge can be noisy late into the night, so bring earplugs.
- The building leans on school groups, sports teams and tour groups, which can make it loud and busy, and group bookings have sometimes been split into separate rooms despite confirmation.
- Reception and common areas can close early (around 6pm, and the kitchen/lounge by about 10pm), which limits late check-in and evening hangouts; arriving after hours has occasionally meant missed check-in info.
- Many beds have no power outlet right beside them, and some bunk beds are high with no side rail, which can feel unsafe.
- Rotorua's geothermal sulphur smell can drift inside.
- There have been occasional insects and spiders in rooms, and a few billing problems, including being charged after not staying.
- Laundry is a paid self-service (around $8 for a wash and dry) and the machines are sometimes worn or out of order.
