HI Hostel Viseu - Pousada de Juventude

This is a recently renovated youth hostel that feels genuinely modern inside: new furniture, flat-screen TVs, air conditioning, and fresh linens and towels. Rooms tend to be spacious, clean, and comfortable, with good beds and pillows, and several have private bathrooms stocked with towels, water, and shower gel. The location is a strong point, roughly a ten-minute walk from the historic center, right by Fontelo park, with easy free parking in front of the door. The shared spaces do a lot of work here. There is a large, well-equipped kitchen where you can cook full meals, plus a comfortable living/common room with a coffee machine and a cafeteria area. Some of the common space is set up thoughtfully for guests, with reading and cultural corners. Laundry is available. Breakfast is included and self-served buffet-style with bread, milk, and basic food items, including some lactose-free milk and yogurt; opinions on it range from rich and varied to simple and in need of more options, and the hot drinks were sometimes only lukewarm. Staff are a clear high point. The front-desk and kitchen team, including people named Diogo and Lara, are repeatedly singled out as warm, attentive, and helpful, with friendly pre-arrival messaging through the app. Families travel well here too: a crib was provided for a baby, pets are welcome, and check-in can be flexible (though one stay was pushed out at 11am over a check-out time confusion). The biggest and most consistent weakness is sound. Wall and door insulation is weak, so you hear conversations in the corridors, doors banging shut, footsteps, and neighboring rooms. The worst nights came from other guests, often youth groups, being loud well past the 23h quiet hour, with noise sometimes starting again as early as 5–6:30am. A few stays found no staff reachable late at night to enforce quiet, and one family felt genuinely unsafe when a group of teenagers ran wild overnight. If you are a light sleeper or traveling with kids who need rest, this is the thing to weigh. Bathrooms are the other recurring gripe: several lack an exhaust fan or a full door/curtain, so the floor floods after showers (a squeegee is provided), and there were scattered issues with leaky or running toilets, narrow shower stalls, and worn or finicky shower fittings.
