Stayed at Zephyr Lodge and left very disappointed. The tab system felt untrustworthy —others were charged for things they didn’t order. Staff were rude and unprofessional, even blaming my friend for their own order mistake and trying to get him to pay extra. Room had bed bugs. Food was poor and overpriced. Also, they charge for return shuttle (100Q on card if no cash). Only positive was the Semuc tour, but bring your own food. There are far better options closer to Semuc.

WARNING BED BUGS!!! They have been dealing with many complaints of bed bugs and will not fix the problem. Do not come here, you will have bed bugs in all of your luggage and clothes guaranteed. Book somewhere else.

The hostel is pretty cool with a nice view and nice pool. But WE GOT BEDBUGS. And it seems like they have had a problem withe BEDBUGS prior to out visit. So be aware!

The only positive thing about this place is its views. I left covered in bed bug bites and with serious food poisoning. The service, food and facilities are also below average. If you want to be constantly locked out of your room, waiting 40+ mins for mediocre overpriced food, and stuck without wifi then stay here, otherwise stay elsewhere.

DO NOT STAY! For the entirety of our stay we were mistreated by the staff who made us feel every thing but welcome! The bed bugs were a big issue and never wanted to be addressed. The staff were unapproachable and didn’t want to answer any general questions we had. Very disappointed and never returning. Can’t stress enough DO NOT STAY HERE

Amazing place and no bedbugs but staff where not friendly at all. We were in a group of four with three of us bringing our own packaged food for the entire stay in lanquin and Semuc Champey and one who ate food in Semuc Champey (not zephyr). We did not get sick and our friend who ate in lanquin did get sick. I would avoid eating in the whole of lanquin and Semuc Champey completely (filtered water was fine).

Wonderful views, a lovely pool and hot tub, and a raucous bar. However, there were several downsides. Bedbugs were ignored by the generally disinterested staff, 8 of 10 people in my group had terrible food poisoning from the food here, and I couldn't help but feel the place was set up to rinse backpackers of every quetzal. Perhaps we visited during an unfortunate 3 day period but overall we left Lanquin gutted that Zephyr could have been so much more. Read their responses to reviews on Trip advisor for a laugh (and an example of how to not be professional). I stayed in El Retiro 8 years ago and they knew how to treat visitors with warmth and kindness. X

Vibe Analysis
The pool and hot tub with a valley-and-jungle view are the main event at Zephyr Lodge. This is the kind of setup where the scenery does a lot of the work: open common areas, a bar by the water, a pool table, and big Lanquin views make it easy to hang around all day. The Semuc Champey tour is another clear strength, with fun guides and good access to the caves, pools, and local excursions. Tipsy tubing can also be a good time, though tour organization can be inconsistent, so it is worth checking details before building a day around it. The social scene leans young, boozy, and sometimes full party-hostel loud. Music can run late and get intense enough to make talking, eating, or sleeping difficult, so this works better for travelers who want pool drinks and nighttime chaos than for anyone chasing quiet jungle recovery. The tradeoff is that Zephyr can feel expensive and controlled for a backpacker place. There is no shared kitchen, outside food may not be allowed, and the restaurant becomes the default option despite uneven food quality and higher prices. Rooms range from decent to tired, with repeated issues around heat, hard beds, weak Wi-Fi, limited privacy curtains, insects or rodents, and private rooms without proper cooling.
